Get your first 100 email subscribers.

You do not need paid ads, lead magnets, or a huge social following to build a valuable customer list. Twenty people who actively asked to hear from you will drive more real sales than two thousand cold followers scrolling past on a feed. Here is how to get your first hundred genuine signups.

Give people a specific reason to sign up.

"Subscribe to our newsletter" is not a reason to hand over an email address. People join email lists when they know exactly what will land in their inbox and why it matters to them.

Vague promises vs. specific invitations.

  • Vague: "Join our mailing list for news and updates." (Nobody wants generic marketing news.)
  • For a bakery or restaurant: "Get our Friday bake list every Thursday evening so you can reserve sourdough before we open."
  • For a craft maker or studio: "Be the first to see each new handcrafted batch 24 hours before it goes public on Instagram."
  • For a service business or mechanic: "Get seasonal maintenance reminders and our spring booking schedule before our calendar fills up."

Four honest ways to collect your first 100 subscribers.

  1. Place a physical QR code at the register or counter. If you meet customers in person, your best email signups happen at the checkout counter. Someone who just pulled out their wallet has already voted for your business. Print a stand with a QR code that opens your mobile signup page directly (you can make a QR code for your link with any free QR tool). 2. Ask out loud with a single sentence. Never rely on customers spotting a sign on their own. When handing over a receipt or bagging an order, ask one plain question: "Would you like a quick email heads-up when our next batch arrives?" If they say yes, point right to the QR code.
  3. Put a direct signup link in your social media bios. Social algorithms show your posts to only a tiny fraction of your followers. Put your hosted signup page in your Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook bio. Read our companion guide on how to move followers to your list.
  4. Send personal notes to people who already support you. Write twenty personal one-to-one emails to friends, family members, former colleagues, and early supporters. Tell them what you are building, explain that you have started a private update list, and share the signup link so they can join voluntarily.
  5. Add an embed form or link to your website header and footer. Every visitor who finds your website through search or word of mouth should see a quiet, clear invitation to stay in touch. Follow our tutorials for Squarespace, Shopify, or WordPress.

Three things to avoid when starting from zero.

Never do these three things.

  • Never buy a contact list. Purchased lists are filled with scraped, abandoned, and spam-trap email addresses. Sending to them will get your domain blacklisted by Spamhaus, Gmail, and Yahoo within days.
  • Never add business cards without permission. Collecting cards at a networking mixer does not constitute consent for a bulk marketing newsletter. Send a personal note first or ask if they want to subscribe.
  • Never obsess over the subscriber count. A list of 50 engaged local customers who open every note and visit your shop is worth infinitely more than 5,000 strangers who never open an email.
