Your domain and inbox

To send from your own address, like hello@yourbusiness.com, you need a domain. Hollerpost sends your email, but it doesn’t host an inbox. Here’s how to get both.

Get a domain

If you don’t have one yet, I point people to Namecheap: get a domain at Namecheap. At checkout you only need the domain itself plus the free WHOIS privacy. Skip the hosting, email, and SSL add-ons.

Then add it in Hollerpost under Settings, Send From Your Own Domain. You’ll get three records to add at Namecheap, and I can add them for you if you’d rather not.

Get an inbox at your domain

Google Workspace (my pick)

A real inbox at your domain, plus calendar, Docs and Meet. It’s the right choice if you’ll answer customers from that address every day. Start with Google Workspace.

Free: forward it to Gmail

Most domain companies forward email for free. Mail sent to hello@yourbusiness.com lands in your Gmail, and you can reply from that address.

  1. Turn on forwarding where you bought the domain. At Namecheap it’s under Domain List, Manage, then Redirect Email (Mail Settings needs to be set to Email Forwarding). Add a forwarder, for example hello to your Gmail address. Elsewhere, search their help for “email forwarding”.
  2. In Gmail on a computer, open Settings, See all settings, then Accounts and Import. Under “Send mail as”, click “Add another email address” and enter your name and hello@yourbusiness.com.
  3. When Gmail asks for an SMTP server, use smtp.gmail.com, port 587, your Gmail address as the username, and an app password as the password. You make one in your Google Account under Security, App passwords; it needs 2-Step Verification turned on.
  4. Gmail sends a confirmation code to hello@yourbusiness.com. It forwards to your Gmail, so open it there and enter the code.
  5. When you write or reply, pick hello@yourbusiness.com in the From line.

The catch: replies sent this way go out through Gmail rather than from your domain, so some mailboxes trust them a little less and a few land in spam. That’s fine for a handful of replies a week. If customers write to you every day, Workspace is worth it.

The Namecheap and Google Workspace links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through them, Hollerpost earns a small commission, at no cost to you.
